Project Description
Buoyanihan is a coastal buoy installation project designed to protect coral reefs and marine ecosystems. Instead of dropping anchors directly onto the seabed, boats can now safely moor to buoys, significantly reducing damage from anchors, vessel collisions, and other boating activities that threaten fragile coral habitats. The initiative promotes community engagement, education, and collaborative reef stewardship—combining modern technology with traditional values to support resilient coastlines and sustainable local livelihoods.
The name Buoyanihan is a fusion of “buoy” (a floating device) and “bayanihan” (the Filipino tradition of communal unity and cooperation), symbolizing collective efforts toward coastal conservation and reef protection.
