Project Description
The Mend a Broken Heart program aims to help children with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). This is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening condition where a blood vessel in the heart (the ductus arteriosus) fails to close after a child’s birth. This leads to oxygenated blood flowing back into the lungs through the aorta, which causes symptoms like weakness, difficulty breathing, stunted growth, pulmonary hypertension and even heart failure.
By partnering with government hospitals, our club assists in this life-saving procedure by providing the PDA occluder – the device used to close off the PDA – to qualified indigent children.
Nominated Club: Rotary Club of Metro Iloilo
Project Showcase Category: Maternal and Child Health
Project Involvement: Rotary, Local Government
Project Funding: USD30000 and above
Project Partners:
Our main partner is the West Visayas Medical Center (WVMC), a government hospital duly designated by the Department of Health as the heart center for the region of Western Visayas. They take care of everything related to the medical procedure, such as pre-op testing, admission, the actual surgery itself and post-op care training to the families of the patients.
Aside from WVMC, we have also partnered with Iloilo Medical City, local and international Rotary clubs (mostly from South Korea), private benefactors, our Rotary Anns as well as individual doctors and nurses.
